Pine Grove, MA F1 Tornado of May 27, 1965

Hampshire County


Figure 1 depicts the surface observations at 2:00 am EDT, which shows a cold front moving across the U.S. Midwest and a line of thunderstorms stretching from Lake Ontario through Pennsylvania. The cold front eventually moved east and triggered more thunderstorms across Massachusetts, which ultimately led to this tornado.

The Pine Grove, MA F1 tornado of May 27, 1965 impacted Hampshire County in Massachusetts. According to NOAA (2019), the F1 tornado caused no fatalities or injuries, but caused $250 dollars in property damage. The tornado touched down in Hampshire County near Westhampton Road at 4:00 pm EDT. The tornado travelled for 1.3 miles and had a maximum width of 33 yards.
