Marginally Severe Storms N. Oklahoma 4/1/2025

Published on

The first real opportunity of the 2025 storm chase season reared its head on April 1. The Storm Prediction Center highlighted an area from Central Kansas on south to Texas – the Enhanced Risk focused mainly on large to very large hail and some tornadoes – some of which were expected to be strong.

The first storms fired near Enid, Oklahoma and quickly grew in strength. A couple of reports of large hail, one of which was reported as 2″ in diameter, were common with the supercell as it quickly moved northeast at 50 mph.

Four miles east of Blackwell – we found a couple of hailstones nearing Quarter size. The storm weakened fairly dramatically as it moved into the Newkirk, Oklahoma area and we stopped the chase at that time.

Later in the evening around 9 pm, the cold front draped across Central Kansas triggered individual supercells and line segments. The supercell-structured storms produced a few tornado reports near Salina. Overall – this system seemed to under-perform, but still produced some severe weather.
