Damaging tornado tracks through northern Durham Region, barns and trees downed
Almost immediately after the Grand Valley-Tottenham tornado was lifting off east of Mount Albert, a second tornado from the “southern supercell” on May 31 touched down about 3.5km SW of Leaskdale. At this location, a barn was destroyed and trees were damaged along Concession 6 near Weirs Road. Another barn was shifted and damaged between Concession 6 and 7 as the tornado continued in an ENE direction south of Leaskdale.
The tornado then crossed Wagner Lake where it carved a path through groves of cedars on either side. From just north of Victoria Corners through the farming communities of Wick, Layton, and Sonya there was sporadic tree damage, due to the majority of the area being open fields. East of Sonya, the tornado took out patches of trees from woodlots and also did damage to a few barns as it paralleled Zion Road for 14km to its terminus. The tornado then quickly roped out in the woods about 2.5km north of Valentia.
