Hail storms in Southern Kansas 5/19/2025

Published on

May 19 was the third in a series of chase days. With the previous two days not yielding anything of substance, my mood was a bit somber and I was rather exhausted. None the less, Beth wanted to go see what we could find – so we set out east of Wichita.

The Storm Prediction Center had a Moderate Risk draped over much of southwest Missouri, southeast Kansas and Oklahoma. We targeted El Dorado, Kansas, mainly due to proximity and wanted to play just east of the dryline.

Storms did develop, but they were mainly marginally severe hailers – at least in the Kansas region. Southeast Oklahoma did have tornadoes – but the distance was too far on a workday.

We did hang out with the “Icechip” team near Leon, Kansas. They are monitoring and measuring different hail events. The storms started to fizzle around sunset – so we made our way back to Wichita for the evening.
