Stewartville, MA F1 Tornado of August 17, 1970


Figure 1 depicts the surface observations at 8:00 am EDT, which shows a cold front moving across Massachusetts. This front was the focus of thunderstorms in the early morning hours of August 2nd, which ultimately led to this tornado.

The Stewartville , MA F1 tornado of August 17 , 1970 impacted Franklin County in Massachusetts. According to NOAA (2019), the F1 tornado caused no fatalities or injuries, but caused $250 thousand dollars in property damage. The tornado touched down near River Road at 7:45 am EDT. The tornado travelled for 16.7 miles and had a maximum width of 33 yards. The tornado ended in New Hampshire near Richmond.
